Description

song plays in background in prem kahani by noorjehan from azra 1961-mumtaz has just found that her ex-lover rajesh who is a guest in her house and isa friend of her husband shashi was actually forced to give her up because he became a revolutionary and mumtaz in a terrible misunderstanding that he had jilted her married shashi -she cannot reverse that so she is mourning her past love -the song says -my lips did not move but i was able to speak-yet somethings were never said -though some unspeakable emotions were uttered -when the tongue is still the eyes talk -but it is not possible to convey your heart felt ever.Raj khosla directs this emotionally charged drama set on the eve of independence from british india where a hunted freedom fighter[RAJESH KHANNA] takes refuge in the house of his dearest friend[SHASHI KAPOOR] ,his desperation at being hunted by the law for murdering a white police officer compels him to turn to his erstwhile friend who is a cop himself but he is unaware that the ex-lover he jilted [MUMTAZ]before taking up his risky mission is now married to the same best friend too,the tension in the movie is as taut as a grid wire and you feel like you are standing on a volcano about to erupt .the dialogues in pristine urdu by rahi masoom raza are memorable as are the characters in the script .the movie is plot driven and it has enough oppurtunities for the 4 main characters played by rajesh, mumtaz and shashi to show their talented skills with both live montages and vocal showdowns ,vinod khanna is the scene stealer as the accused man arrested for the murder itself as a scapegoat by the british authorities ,he plays a realistic truck driver with relish and gives a highly emotional performance as the fiery pathan who will sacrifice his life for friendship and honour but will not betray a friend ,the retrospective look at friendship in indian culture is interesting as it views two entirely different aspects of the same emotion .the movie used some great music by l.p. ,but in a ground breaking endeavour khosla memorably used the immortal song of noor jehan from azra composed by master ineyat hussain from a pakistani movie on radio to emphasize the turmoil of the characters which became a memorable highlight with great emotional impact in hindi cinema as both mumtaz and rajesh enact the tremendous scene by their facial expressions and body language alone -a great moment portrayed by a great melody becomes true art,as never before -enjoy.
